CACTE Leaderhip Program - LITE

Leadership in Technical Education
2008-09

Program Description

Over the next five to ten years, many existing Career and Technical Education administrators will be leaving the profession, either through retirement or career changes.  The CACTE organization, which provides professional development for career and technical administrators, has created a leadership program to prepare current CTE educators to move into administrative roles.

The LITE (Leadership in Technical Education) program will select 20 new, veteran and prospective CTE leaders to become more knowledgeable of CTE programmatic needs, develop management skills, become more culturally effective leaders, and develop 21st century leadership skills.  These LITE professionals will be provided an expense allowance which will cover professional development costs such as:  conference registration, professional travel, professional books, magazines and journals, and other costs incurred in participating in the program.

Program participants can be nominated by existing CTE Directors, CCCS Program Directors, or other CTE educators.  A nomination form must be submitted by the nominating CTE educator which outlines the participant’s potential as well as current leadership experience.

Program Structure

The LITE participants will work with a leadership consultant Dr. F.C. Luna and other CTE Local Directors while they pursue the objectives of the program.  The program design will be a seminar format where participants will do professional readings, investigate current research in leadership and CTE as well as interact with others in the program and the CTE profession.

Participants will meet formally five times between December 2008 and July 2009.   Each participant will be required to develop a leadership plan as a result of their participation in the program.  The plan should include further leadership development and outline steps needed to meet the credentialing requirements of a CTE local director, if they do not currently possess the credential.

Each participant will also be required to mentor a new administrator in the future years.  It is expected that participants in the LITE program will become future leaders in career and technical education in Colorado.
